Description

An Optical Technician is a skilled professional responsible for manufacturing, repairing, and maintaining optical instruments, lenses, and devices. They work closely with optometrists, ophthalmologists, and patients to ensure accurate lens fabrication and proper fitting of eyewear. The role combines technical expertise, precision, and customer service.


Lens Fabrication and Assembly:

  • Manufacture and grind lenses to prescription specifications using specialized equipment.
  • Assemble lenses into frames, ensuring proper alignment and accuracy.


Quality Assurance:

  • Inspect lenses for defects or irregularities, ensuring they meet quality standards.
  • Perform calibrations and adjustments to ensure optical devices are functioning correctly.


Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Repair damaged or malfunctioning eyewear and optical devices.
  • Maintain and service optical machinery and tools.


Customer Interaction:

  • Assist customers in selecting appropriate frames and lenses based on prescriptions and personal preferences.
  • Provide guidance on proper eyewear care and maintenance.


Technical Support:

  • Collaborate with eye care professionals to verify prescriptions and ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Stay updated on advancements in optical technology and materials.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in operating optical tools and machinery, such as lensometers, edgers, and grinders.
  • Strong understanding of lens materials, coatings, and refractive properties.
  • Ability to handle precise measurements and alignments.
  • Customer Service:
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with patients and address their needs.
  • Capability to troubleshoot and repair optical equipment efficiently.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Certification or degree in optical technology (preferred).
  • Previous experience in an optical lab or similar setting (desirable).
