The responsibilities associated with this position includes but not limited to:


Provide comprehensive Ancillary Services (AS) analyses, strategy recommendations and execution inclusive of Reserve market simulations, AS demand and projections, competition analysis, sensitivity analyses and other AS-related studies that will support the overall AS strategies. The activities include but not limited to:

  • Conduct AS strategy development studies, emerging technology studies, and other energy and AS market-related studies
  • Conduct comprehensive competition analysis in the AS and energy market
  • Provide risk analyses and mitigations in the AS and energy market for company’s generating assets.
  • AS CSP and Reserve Market simulations including demand and supply projections to gauge the level of competition and craft the recommended strategies to enable the existing and new assets to compete in these markets.
  • Handle the overall AS CSP process from leading the preparation of the pre-qualification requirements, crafting of the recommended AS volume and pricing, up to the ASPA filing.
  • Conduct optimization studies to maximize the value from SNAP generation assets and serve as a basis for direct ASPA contracting.
  • Participate in negotiating with NGCP for an ASPA contract (including ASPA forward contracts).
  • Analysis of Rules, Orders, Policies, and Regulations which may affect the short to long-term strategies in the spot and ancillary services markets.


Provide regularly updated short (one year), medium term (five years) and, long term SNAP revenue forecast through in-depth understanding and extensive analysis inclusive of sensitivities with in-depth understanding and extensive analyses using the necessary tools (fundamental and probabilistic models):

  • Fundamental and probabilistic production and revenue projections, including annual budget target setting and monitoring for spot energy, AS, and bilateral contracted quantities (BCQ).
  • Conduct revenue sensitivity runs and extensive analysis to project impact to overall portfolio brought by the changing market situation and landscape.


Development and maintenance of methodologies and tools necessary for revenue forecasting, corporate strategic planning, financial valuation of projects, expansions, mergers and acquisitions, refinancing activities, and refurbishments.

  • Develop and maintain the fundamental and probabilistic models to support the short to long-term revenue forecasting activities.
  • Develop and maintain the tools for the reserve market simulations to support the revenue projections and strategy recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain probabilistic model/s for the water value calculation and production forecasts in coordination with the Production Planning team to ensure that the latest operational constraints are considered.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and back-testing of the models to reflect the hydro plant system updates including Plant/Unit availability schedule/deration/efficiency, updated reservoir elevation status of reservoirs, incorporation of updated inflow forecast for all hydro plants, irrigation requirements, flood control, rule curve, bathymetric and other operational constraints.


Provide recommendations, production, and revenue forecasts, in the evaluation of the financial viability of potential green field projects and acquisitions, and refurbishment.


Proper data handling and process documentation:

  • Data storage and documentation of all relevant market data, hydrological and plant data required to perform these tasks
  • Preparation and update of processes and procedures to perform tasks
  • Market data processing and automation, and process improvement activities


Other tasks that may be assigned from time to time as follows but not limited to:

  • SCALE exercise (one year look back analysis on market performance)
  • Support in the econometric modeling activities, mainly with the formulation of the econometric model which stands as the market pricing formula for the probabilistic “Crystal Ball” model.
  • Development of the probabilistic model for market price forecasting using Python programming language for a more efficient and faster simulation runtime.
  • Provide evaluation of the financial viability of plant maintenance activities.
  • Other sources of price references/indices (e.g., MERALCO blended rates projections) as required.
  • Training of colleagues as deemed necessary.
  • Assist in the implementation of Integrated Management Systems (Quality, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental, and Asset) and compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the different programs of the organization
  • Performs other related duties that may be assigned by the immediate superior


Position Requirements:

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and Ancillary Services Operations including applicable rules and regulations
  • Market Analysis
  • Statistical and analytical skills
  • Corporate Planning and Financial Analysis
  • Optimization, Market Simulation Tools, Forecasting models (SDDP/ PLEXOS/ Crystal Ball/ Monte Carlo simulations)
  • Capable to do research work for the different Markets, Plant technological advancements and cost, Contracts, Policies, Rules and, Regulations (including External Relations /Customer Orientation)
  • Understands the legal, technical and commercial provisions in contracts
  • Ability to understand and absorb broad business/regulatory issues, finance and mathematical concepts
  • Ability to execute under pressure and under tight time schedules
  • Knowledge in Google Suite applications, Lean Six Sigma, and Data Science
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • With preference for candidates with substantial working knowledge on hydroelectric power plant operations, electric power system operation and analysis, and programming.


Experience:

  • At least five (5) years of experience in the energy market with background in Engineering and/or technical field, and experience in planning, forecasting, and market analysis.
  • Highly substantial experience in the energy market.


Education:

  • Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Applied Sciences
  • Experience or knowledge in financial planning is preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Energy Economics or any relevant degree
  • PhD in any relevant discipline an advantage.
