Position Title: Paralegal

Reports To: Supervising Attorney / Team Leader

Department: Legal Services / Litigation Support / Corporate Compliance (Retainers)

Job Summary:

The Paralegal provides critical substantive legal support to the firm’s attorneys, primarily focusing on factual investigation, advanced legal research, detailed document drafting, and comprehensive case management. This role is essential for increasing attorney efficiency and ensuring meticulous preparation for all phases of litigation or corporate legal work.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

A. Legal Research and Analysis

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research on statutes, case law, judicial opinions, and regulations using legal databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw, local jurisdiction databases).
  • Analyze research findings and prepare clear, concise research memoranda and summary reports to advise attorneys on legal arguments, jurisdictional issues, and precedents.
  • Verify legal citations and perform “Shepardizing” or similar processes to ensure the validity of cited law.

B. Document Drafting and Preparation (Litigation and Retainer Support)

  • Draft initial versions of routine legal documents, including pleadings (complaints, answers), motions, discovery requests (interrogatories, requests for production), notices, and subpoenas.
  • Prepare and organize exhibits, appendices, and document production sets for submission to opposing counsel and the court, ensuring compliance with all filing rules.
  • Assist in drafting contracts, corporate resolutions, and governance documents (for corporate/transactional practices).

C. Case and File Management (Litigation Support)

  • Manage the firm’s case files (physical and electronic), ensuring all documents are properly indexed, logged, and backed up in the case management system.
  • Track and calendar all crucial case deadlines, court dates, discovery response dates, and statutes of limitations, and proactively communicate these to the supervising attorney.
  • Prepare litigation support materials, including trial notebooks, exhibit binders, and witness/expert witness contact lists.

D. Factual Investigation and Client Communication

  • Assist attorneys in interviewing clients, witnesses, and experts to gather facts, evidence, and documentary information.
  • Summarize key documents, deposition transcripts, medical records, and expert reports to extract and organize facts relevant to the case strategy.
  • Serve as a professional liaison between the attorney and clients, court personnel, and opposing counsel, ensuring all communication adheres to ethical rules (cannot provide legal advice).

E. Office Support

  • Assist the staff in keeping the office premises, equipment, and vehicles clean and well maintained.
