A Truck Driver is responsible for safely transporting goods and materials between locations, adhering to traffic laws, delivery schedules, and company policies. They ensure cargo is loaded/unloaded properly, maintain vehicle condition, and complete necessary documentation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operate various types of trucks (e.g., delivery, semi-trailer, flatbed) to transport goods to designated destinations.
2. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to check brakes, tires, fluids, and other critical components.
3. Secure cargo using appropriate equipment (straps, chains, tarps) to prevent damage during transit.
4. Follow assigned routes and delivery schedules, adjusting for traffic, weather, or road conditions as needed.
5. Complete delivery receipts, logbooks, and other required paperwork accurately and on time.
6. Maintain communication with dispatchers or supervisors to report delays, issues, or delivery status.
7. Comply with all local, national, and international traffic regulations and safety standards.
8. Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks (e.g., checking oil, adding coolant, cleaning) and report mechanical problems promptly.
9. Ensure the safety of self, other road users, and the transported cargo at all times.
10. Assist with loading/unloading cargo when required, using proper lifting techniques or equipment.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Valid professional driver’s license (appropriate class for the vehicle type, e.g., Commercial Driver’s License/CDL).
- Clean driving record with no major violations or accidents.
- Proven experience as a truck driver or in a similar role (requirements vary by employer).
- Knowledge of traffic laws, route planning, and vehicle maintenance basics.
- Ability to lift heavy items (if applicable) and work in various weather conditions.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Good communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Physical stamina to sit for long periods and handle the demands of the job.
- Some positions may require background checks, drug testing, or certification in hazardous materials transport.
Work Conditions
- May involve long hours, overnight travel, and irregular schedules (including weekends and holidays).
- Work takes place primarily on the road, with occasional time at warehouses or loading docks.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic, and potential physical strain from loading/unloading.
